Violence against women is a gross violation of human rights and a form of discrimination against women.
It can take many forms, such as physical violence, sexual violence, stalking, female genital mutilation or forced marriage. Violence against women is both a cause and a consequence of unequal power relations between women and men and limits the full advancement of women.
Violence against women, including domestic violence, occurs in every state despite few positive changes in law, policy and practice.
States are obliged to respect, protect and fulfill the human rights of all their citizens. Consequently, all reasonable steps must be taken to prevent, investigate, and punish all forms of violence against women, including domestic violence. Violence against women is a complex problem, especially when it occurs in the home, which can be exacerbated by the reaction of the authorities to whom women turn for help.
The course “Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence” covers the key concepts, international and European legal framework and case law governing the prevention and protection of women and girls from violence, with an emphasis on the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence.
In addition, the course provides legal professionals with practical tools for dealing with cases of violence against women as well as a domesticated violence with respect to human rights and victim centered approach.
The course “Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence” offers a detailed and comprehensive curriculum to enhance the judicial response in cases of violence against women and support access to justice for victims of violence.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand key concepts related to violence against women and domestic violence as well as recognize common barriers to accessing justice for victims of violence against women;
- Refer to the key international and European legal instruments.
Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence, in your daily work; - Take a gender-sensitive and victim-centered approach to violence against women and domestic violence.
- Understand the important role of civil and criminal law professionals in protecting victims of violence against women and domestic violence and ensuring their access to justice;
- Understand the importance of cooperation and coordination to ensure higher standards and greater efficiency in the judicial system and more effective responses to violent offenders.

- The international and European legal framework
- Overcoming barriers / access to justice
- Criminal justice response I – Investigation and pre-trial proceedings
- Criminal justice response II – Trial and sentencing
- Civil justice response
- Alternative dispute resolution
Course duration: 4 weeks
At the end of the course, you must take an exam. Graduates who pass the exam with honors receive an official certificate.
